‘Little Paradise’ of Santa Cruz *** Kawalek boliwijskiego raju

Da sie jednak przezyc – w mieszkaniu zawsze chodzimy/siedzimy w bieliznie, w nocy wlaczamy klimatyzacje (trzeba oszczedzac), komary zabijamy lub odstraszamy smarujac sie kremami i podlaczajac specjalne ‘zapachowe’ tabletki do pradu. Zainfestowane jedzenie wyrzucamy, a pojedyncze robale ubijamy w miare mozliwosci – szybkie sa skubance…

Tropical city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra may seem like a paradise. However, that couldn’t be any further from the truth – living in a huge, crowded city full of smog, dust, mosquitoes and other insects is far from idyllic. Ah, I forgot to add, with an average air temperature of more than 30 degrees Celsius (in a shade) – which in summer translates into 40 and with more than 60% of humidity, this is an explosive mixture … and very sticky one.

However, one can survive – we always walk around the apartment wearing only underwear and at night turning on the air conditioning. We kill or deter mosquitoes with creams and special plug – in ‘scent’; throw away infested with bugs food and whenever possible, kill those fast-moving monsters… Ants, which proved to be something else, almost all died after eating a special gel that we bought in the American store (recently they stopped selling it so they better won’t come back). I admit, in the fight against the ‘nature’ is better to live on the 8th floor (I do not even want to think what it must be living down there), but here comes another enemy: the top floor neighbor walking on the tiled floors in her heels … Well, the building in which we live, despite being relatively ‘young’, is slowly starting to fall apart, and the walls thin as cardboard seem to be helping in this process. I don’t even want to go into leaks and mold. But all in all, it’s not so bad – and we are very lucky that we live in a city center and can use a big pool (however that isn’t called luck but money).

Not surprisingly, the inhabitants of Santa Cruz sometimes want to get away from the sun drowned city and where do they go? Yesterday – Tuesday day off from work (for unknown reason) – we met half the city in a ‘Biocentro Guembe’ – only 15 min. drive from city centre. This richer half, because an admission to this piece of paradise is 120 bs. per person and that’s quite a lot. Therefore, the place was packed with ‘white faces’ and the dominant language was … Portuguese. Spending a hot day in this place is however worth the price! The resort is located on 24 acres and filled with many different attractions – besides bathing in many ‘natural’ pools and laying down on the sun loungers or hammocks with beer in hand (beer is not included in the price of the ticket), you can also do kayaking on a real lake, go to ‘Mariposario’ – a paradise for lovers of an exotic butterflies, ‘Tortugario’ – full of turtles or ‘Aviario’ – a piece of jungle covered with a net with many ‘talking’ parrots. There is also an ‘Orquideario’ with orchids, but they probably only bloom in October?

My wybralismy fast – food z oczywistych powodow.

There are also organised rides on horse-drawn carriage to a place called ‘Swamp’ (which we did not try, but we would happily next time go for a bike ride. But do you know what ‘Guembe’  has to offer so we could enjoy nature and all the activities? – no, lunch and drinks are not included in the fare, but there was NO MOSQUITOES!! And a day without mosquitoes is a good day :)

But back to reality – people go to ‘Guembe’ for a whole day, and so about noon they are strike with hunger. You can’t bring your own food, because they search backpacks at the entrance (!), so you have to choices: to last those persistent rumble and stomach spasms or purchase a meal in one of several dining points. The choice was between – buffet in a restaurant for 100 bs. per person or fast (slow) – food for 30-40 bs. Of course you could also deceive hunger with beer for 18 bs., a cup of water or ice – cream. We chose fast – food for obvious reasons. In the end, who wants to pay 100 bs. for a cold buffet! Our burgers also weren’t too warm, but for half the price we both filled our stomachs, and yet we could enjoy cold beer :) Ah, and this 30 minute queue wasn’t so bad! And then we could just float in the ‘natural’ pools with azure water, looking at the blue sky dotted with white clouds :)

P.S. Calkowity koszt wyprawy jednodniowej do RAJU to ponad 250 bs. (okolo 30€) od osoby:
120 bs. wstep
30 burger
18 piwo
15 woda
60 taksowka (koszt w jedna strone).

Warto zabrac ze soba przyjaciol i podzielic sie kosztami transportu, a przy okazji umilic sobie czas – bo w grupie zawsze razniej!

P.S. The total cost of a one-day trip to PARADISE is about 250 bs.(€ 30) per person:
120 bs. admission
30 burger
18 beer
15 water
60 taxi (the cost of one-way).

It would be better to go there with friends and share the costs of transport and at the same time have more fun – because in the group is always merrier!
