Snow After Rain *** Snieg po deszczu

Cochabamba is the highest city, I’ve ever lived.

It is located in a valley surrounded by mountains, the highest of which – ‘Pico Tunari’ is more than 5,000 meters high. As I wrote some time ago, Cochabamba is called ‘The City of Eternal Spring’, and although we can see the snow-capped mountains through the windows, which gives an impression that it’s cold outside, in reality it’s rather hot :) In the winter, there is usually no rain and the surrounding hills have brownish color, but when the rain comes, the temperature in the city may fall to 10 degrees C. Cool weather could last for up to two days, but as usually happens after the rain, the sun comes out and receding clouds uncover snowy peaks of Cordillera de Cochabamba.

The first day after the rain is the most beautiful, as water falling from the sky purifies always dirty air, exposing far horizons. This is probably the best day for a trip to ‘Cristo’ – next time, if only I have the opportunity, I’ll climb that hill again to take some smog-free pictures.

In fact, the oldest mountaineers can not remember such a winter (except maybe the 123-year-old man from La Paz), because at the same time, when it was raining in Cochabamba and cold winds blew in Santa Cruz, white powder covered not only the hills of La Paz, Virgen Mary in Oruro and roads of Potosi, but even the Chilean Atacama Desert – the driest hot desert in the world!
