Unique Church of ‘San Jose de Chiquitos’ *** Jedyny taki kościół na świecie

San Jose de Chiquitos to trzecia najstarsza misja jezuicka w Chiquitanii, założona w 1697 przez ks. Felipe Suareza i Dionisio Avila.

San Jose de Chiquitos is the third oldest Jesuit mission in Chiquitania, founded in 1697 by Fr. Dionisio Suarez and Felipe Avila. The town was relocated only once at the beginning of the eighteenth century and today is located roughly halfway between Santa Cruz de la Sierra and Puerto Suarez, being an important stop on the railway route Santa Cruz – Brazil.

San Jose de Chiquitos is also a gateway to two national parks: Kaa – Iya and Santa Cruz de la Vieja. The first is the largest park in Bolivia, with the biggest concentration of jaguars and the largest dry forest on the American continent. The second is the smallest park in the country dedicated to history of the region (here the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra was originally founded, later relocated to the banks of the river Pirai), which is a home to over 70 species of birds and many rare plants.

San Javier de Chiquitos ponoć przypomina Santa Cruz de la Sierra sprzed 60 lat – posiada niska zabudowę wzdłuż szerokich zakurzonych ulic oraz spokojny park w centrum, z pięknymi drzewami toborochi.

Apparently, the town itself resembles Santa Cruz de la Sierra from 60 years ago – having low buildings along the wide dusty streets and peaceful park in the center with beautiful Toborochi trees. Plan of San Jose de Chiquitos Jesuit missions is more less the same as San Xavier’s —> click, but the church is completely different. Its stone late Baroque architecture resembles other such establishments in Argentina and Paraguay, which are in ruins today, making the church of San Jose de Chiquitos unique in the World!

Założenie zostało budowane w czterech etapach (1747- 1754): najpierw postawiono kościół (templo), następnie dzwonnice (campanario), później kostnice (osario), a na samym końcu szkole (colegio) i warsztaty (talleres).

The mission has been compleated in four stages (1747- 1754): first the church (templo) was built, then the bell tower (campanario), later ossuary (osorio) and at the end the school (colegio) and workshops (talleres). Today, the church is in the maintenance, its walls being dried and preserved, and therefore the entry to bell tower, from where one can see (presumably) an amazing views of the surrounding area, is prohibited. The complex houses also a museum, which we didn’t visit, because it was on the lunch break:)

The interior of three-nave church is immersed in darkness, but beautiful baroque wooden artworks immediately attract attention: expressive sculptures on the side altars, gilded tabernacle, or angel heads. The latter surprised me at once with their seriousness, so different from somewhat happy angels of San Xavier! However, they look more authentic, being stripped of polychrome.

Budynek colegio dziś miejscy szkole muzyczna, podtrzymującą tradycje muzyki barokowej boliwijskich misji jezuickich; również tu, co dwa lata, odbywa się Międzynarodowy Festiwal Muzyki Renesansu i Baroku.

Wewnętrzny dziedziniec także kryje kilka niespodzianek, w formie wyblakłych lecz dobrze zachowanych fresków w stylu naiwnym. Boczną ścianę kościoła ozdabiają pilastry; ściany colegio pokrywają zaś kwiaty i ptaki, postaci ludzkie oraz fałszywe ozdobne portale.

The colegio building houses music school, continuing Bolivian Baroque music tradition of Jesuit missions. San Jose de Chiquitos hosts, every two years, the International Festival of Music of the Renaissance and Baroque.

Inner courtyard also hides a few surprises, in the form of original frescoes in naive style, faded but well preserved: flowers and ornamental birds, human figures and false portals.

Na jednym z nich widzimy figury Świętego Krzysztofa z dzieckiem, Św. Jerzego z kwiatem, Św. Wincentego z trąbką.

On one wall we can see the figure of St. Christopher with the child, St. George with flower and St. Vinccent with a trumpet.

There is also a fresco dated 1779, depicting the Bishop of Santa Cruz coming with a visit, which at first glance resembles Madonna in a wide dress :)

The biggest painting, created in 1777 when the school building served as a governor office, represents the military parade of soldiers in French – like uniformes.

The key to understanding the cultural expression of the Jesuit mission is the consciousness that the cultur of this region is a synthesis of two completely different artistic styles – European Baroque and local Indian traditions. This style is called ‘mestizo‘. I wrote more on Bolivia’s Jesuit mission after visiting San Xavier —> click and —> click.

Informacje praktyczne/ Practical information:

San Jose de Chiquitos is located 3 hours drive from Santa Cruz, a bit away from the main road. You can stop there for a lunch, but unfortunately I cannot recommend any restaurant. We ate in one located on the main square, which from the outside looked nice and clean. However, the food did not amazed us, well, maybe with the exception of the soup for 5 bs.

There are many hotels of varying standard. The best is said to be La Villa Chiquitana, which has also its own restaurant and a swimming pool! Price – 250 bs. for a single room with bathroom, air conditioning, refrigerator.

There are also many artisan shops but the same as the museum, they are closed for lunch (12.30 – 15.00).

P.S. We could also have a taste of what is awaiting us further into the wild – huge insects like this (I was glad it was dead though;)
