Lomas de Arena II – Terribly Beautiful Place *** O strasznie pięknym miejscu

Czego chcieć więcej? Piękną pogoda, bezchmurne niebo, ciepły biały piasek pod stopami. Dużo piasku. A pośród niego szafirowe i szmaragdowe laguny oraz wiecznie zielone oazy, z tropikalną dziką roślinnością…

What to want more? Beautiful weather, clear skies, warm white sand under your feet. A lot of sand. And among it the sapphire and emerald lagoons and evergreen oases, full of wild tropical vegetation …

I must say, I’ve seen some sand in my life –  boundless Sahara Desert in Morocco, or massive sand dunes meeting the sea in Leba, but they can’t compete with the beauty of Lomas de Arena, located just few kilometers from Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

Sand dunes in the middle of the jungle? In Bolivia everything is possible!

I wrote about Parque Regional de Lomas de Arena few months ago, after our first and unsuccessful expedition to this miracle of nature (you may read about it here —-> click). This time it wasn’t easy either – it happens that the road to heaven passes through hell. First the ‘unfinished’ road to Palmasola prison, later puddles and river crossing our path.

We did encounter a few stray dogs too, some cows and … weird people. We almost decided to turn back when the white car has passed, encouraging us to continue our trip. And we managed, looking with astonishment at the big wall of sand, which grew out of nowhere in front of us. We also noted with relief the proximity of the hotel ‘Las Lomas’ and other tourists, some flying high.

Pomogli turyści, tacy jak my.

And believe me, in such a wild place, other tourist are a real treasure, as we find out on the way back when … our car hung dead on a small slope, with one wheel stuck in a mud and the other in the air. The phone call to guard of the park did not help, neither the people in the hotel (although they lent us a chain) or in a nearby restaurant. The only help came from fellow tourists. First we were encountered by a tiny jeep full of very young girls, one of whom turned out to be my ex-student! They tried to pull us, but their car lacked the ‘power’. For the next car we have waited almost an hour but we were not disappointed – the driver and his older son knew exactly what to do, and they pulled our car out of trouble on the first try. God bless them for that!

Jeżeli jesteście w Santa Cruz de la Sierra, to Lomas de Arena powinny się znaleźć na waszej liście ‘must see’!

This trip was the most exciting, beautiful and terrible at the same time, but luckily everything turned out well and we arrived safely home.

What is the moral of our adventure? If you are in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, the Lomas de Arena should be on your  ‘must see’ list!

Powodzenia! Miejsce to jest zdecydowanie warte zachodu:)

However, one should remember that it is not easy to get there. Some travel agencies, such as Nick’s Adventures Bolivia (who we met in the park, sandboarding!), offer their tours there. This option is the most expensive, but the safest. The place can also be reached by bus from the city centre to Palmasola Jail or a taxi to the gate of the park, and then one has to walk on foot for about four kilometers. But I don’t recommend this option to single travellers, as there were many thefts and robberies reported! Not to mention wandering dogs, cows and weird people. And finally, you can reach Lomas de Arena in your own/rental car, but if God forbid something happens on the way, you can rely only on yourself and … the kindness of other drivers. The park guards will not help, as they only have motorbikes and quads, and usually there is just one on duty, busy opening the gate and collecting fee for admission (10 bs.).

Good Luck! This place is definitely worth the trouble:)

‘Lomas de Arena’ I *** Tajemnicze wydmy w boliwijskiej dżungli

Lomas de Arena to jedna z najbardziej niezwykłych atrakcji departamentu Santa Cruz. Dlaczego?

***

Lomas de Arena is one of most unusual attractions in Santa Cruz. Why? Well, it’s quite unusual to find sand dunes in the middle of the lush tropics! They say that it’s like being on the sea side, just without the sea! There are some natural lagoons, but they can disappear in the dry season completely. Apparently, you could also find here some very unusual birds and animals including storks, armadillos, owls and the occasional emu and numerous unique species of flora.

This jewel of nature, the area of more than 13000 km 2, today has been protected and the access to the Regional Park is rather limited. It’s not expensive to get there or neither too far – it’s only 12 km from the city centre by Palmasola Jail and the entrance fee is about 10 bs. per person. The biggest obstacle in getting to dunes is …. the road, or rather lack of it:

Yeap, we did drive to the gates of the Park, where you have to park a car and walk about 3 km to get to the dunes, but it was getting cloudy and we decided that if it rains, we might not be able to get back to the city. On the way our car stalled once in one of the big puddles and we got fright:)
