‘Palacio Portales’

This beautiful palace, designed by French architect Eugene Bliault, was built between 1915 and 1927. The estate, consisting of main palace, stables, guards houses and a theater, demonstrates an eclectic mix of architectural styles.

On the outside, we can see French classicism, surrounded by Japanese gardens with many exotic plants, while inside, each room has a different design. Main hall as well as visitors’ rooms are decorated in cold classicism. The main room (ballroom) resembles the chapel of the church, thanks to its central element – fireplace in the form of a baroque altar, and beautiful wooden staircase leading to the richly decorated galleries, where ancient Rome joins Romanism and Gothic (desks and chairs reminds stalls) . First floor bedrooms, secretly linked by shared bathroom, were decorated in the secular empire style. Behind ballroom, there is another room in the Empire style followed by the play room (with billiard) in a Moroccan style!

Wraz z budowniczymi i ponad 20 artystami! A wiec mamy tutaj marmury z Wloch, tapisterie i meble z Francji, ceramike z Maroka i Poludniowej Hiszpanii, itp., itp. Piekna stolarka, rowniez zostala przywieziona panelami ze Starego Kontynentu.

But not this blend of styles is here the most interesting (after all, we have many eclectic palaces in Poland), but the place of the palace, and that all its elements have been imported from Europe! Along with the builders and more than 20 artists! So here we have marble from Italy, tapisterie and furniture from France, pottery from Morocco and southern Spain, etc., etc. Beautiful woodwork panels have also been brought from the Old Continent.

Perhaps you may wonder who commissioned this property? Well, it was the richest man of his time – Simon I. Patiño, knowny in the world under the nickname ‘Tin Baron’. The history of this man would be suitable for the Hollywood superproduction – he was born into a poor family, raised only by the mother. Together with wife he worked hard to support their family. Being already the middle-aged man, Patiño discovered the tin mines, and since then his life never lacked in anything …

No ladnie…. Pewnie dzieki temu, palac utrzymany jest w nieskazitelnym stanie (szczegolnie sypialnie:) a wszystkie meble sa oryginalne i niezuzyte. Rowniez dzieki suchemu klimatowi, tapety i malowidla wygladaja dzis jak przed wiekiem.

Another curiosity is that the Patiño family commissioned the building of Portales in Cochabamba (the palace is named after the huge door, leading from the ballroom to the garden), having had one residence near the city. In fact, they never lived in Portales! Probably thanks to this, the palace is kept in pristine condition (bedrooms in particular :) and all the furniture are original and unused. Also thanks to the dry climate, wallpaper and paintings today look like a century ago.

Niestety, choroba serca uniemozliwila mu takze podroz do ojczyzny. W swoim testamencie, zapisal owy majatek miastu.

Many will ask why someone spent so much money to build a house and never lived in it (ba, had never seen it live!)? Well, Patiño family lived at that time in France. They loved Bolivia, and they had a big hopes towards Cochabamba, but unfortunately the political system did not allow them to implement plans into life (apparently Patino wanted to build a highway linking La Paz to Cochabamba, but resigned because of the protests of local people …..). He also had a heart condition that prevent him from travelling.  In his will however, he gave an estate to the city council.

Dzis miesci sie tu ‘Centrym Kulturalne i Pedagogiczne im. Simon I. Patiño’. Dziala tu muzeum, galeria, w sali balowej odbywaja sie koncerty i wystapienia.

Today, palace is a house to ‘Cultural and Pedagogical Centre of Simon I. Patiño’, with museum, gallery and concerts organised in a ballroom. Besides the museum, admission to all events is free!

A wiecie, co jest najlepsze? – Mieszkamy 5 minut piechota od palacu:)/ And do you know what’s the best? – We live 5 minutes walk from the palace :)
