The Old Road to/from Cochabamba *** Stara droga do Cochabamby (z Santa Cruz)

Google Maps podaje, że podroż ‘starą drogą do Cochabamby’ (carretera antigua a Cbba) z Samaipaty zajmuje 5 godzin i 45 minut; legendy gloszą, iż kilku śmiałków zrobiło te trasę w 6 godzin.

Google Maps says that the trip by ‘old road to Cochabamba’ (carretera antigua a Cbba) from Samaipata takes 5 hours 45 minutes; legend says that a few brave souls have made it in 6 hours. It is assumed that normally the time of travel is 8 hours, but the journey took us 10 hours! Well, maybe 9, because in the evening there was a terrible traffic jam in Cochabamba and we’ve stopped on the way few times to stretch our legs and check if the tires are ok.

The new road connecting Santa Cruz with Cochabamba was built on the other side of the Amboro Park —> click, and it’s for about 5 hours straight. The worst are the last 3 hours, starting in Villa Tunari in the Chapare region, where the road goes through ‘unstable geologically’ mountainous areas of rainforest. The old road looks the other way round – the first 8 hours (6, if starting from Samaipata) are via a curvy road full of holes and from Comarapa mainly gravel, and only the last 3 hours take us by brand new highway.

I guess I’ve never felt such stress in such a beautiful natural circumstances. No one probably would like to experience a vehicle breakdown in the middle of nowhere. Just that day, almost nobody else was going that road, so it would be impossible to get some assistance and there was no phone coverage.

For 6 hours or so we drove with the ‘souls on our shoulder’, with the illusory hope that each next turn will be the last one. After an hour in the rainforest, I also developed the fear of ‘falling clouds’, recalling the misty scenes from the novel of King …

You can’t even imagine with what relief we greeted the small town of Epizana where a brand new highway to Cochabamba and Sucre starts. We were also happy that we won’t have to stay overnight in the local Hilton, because there was a real chance that we reach our destination before nightfall.

I tak też się stało. Dostaliśmy tez prezent od losu, który wynagrodził nam częściowo stresy podroży – widok ośnieżonych szczytów Cordillera de Cochabamba w ciepłym świetle ostatnich promieni zachodzącego słońca…

And so it happened. But before that, we got a gift from the Mother Earth that has rewarded partially our stressful journey – view of snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera de Cochabamba in the warm light of the last rays of the setting sun …el camino antiguo a Cochabamba

Tip: I do not recommend to travel the old road to Cochabamba, even for pretty views (not so breathtaking though). Unfortunately, from time to time the travellers have no other choice, when there is a landslide on the other route or one of the bridges collapses (as quite recently). However, if you have to get from Santa Cruz (Samaipata) to Sucre, travel this particular road during the day, mainly for safety reasons!
