Wrzesniowa edycje ‘Dia del Peaton‘ w Cochabambie uwazam za jedna z najlepszych! Ruch w miescie zatrzymal sie juz w sobote o polnocy, wiec z rana powietrze wolne bylo od smogu. A jak pamietacie, zanieczyszczenie powietrza to zmora no.1 Miasta Wiecznej Wiosny, ktore w tym roku znalazlo sie na 4 miejscu najbardziej zanieczyszczonych miast Ameryki Poludniowej!

W niedziele jednak moglismy oddychac ozezwiajaca bryza znad gor, ktore poprzedniego dnia pokryly sie bialym puchem. Zaraz po deszczu:)

Organizacja tego ‘Dnia bez samochodu’ byla perfekcyjna – ulice patrolowala policja, ktora wylapywala tych, ktorym nie chcialo sie pedalowac. Ba! Bylismy swiadkami prawdziwych poscigow i miejmy tylko nadzieje, ze nie zakonczyly sie one zadnym wypadkiem drogowym, a jedynie wysoka grzywna dla piratow.

Nasza kondycja widocznie ulegla poprawie, bo objezdzilismy cale miasto i nie bylismy ani zmeczeni, ani zakwaszeni dnia nastepnego:) Oto niktore miejsca, do ktorych ‘przypedalowalismy’:

– Av. Las Americas z rowerowym graffiti:

– Plaza Principal piekna jak zwykle i jakby troche podmalowana:

– opustoszaly bazar La Cancha i posterunek policji, ktora oferowala wode i powietrze do opon gratis!

– nowa i przestronna Av. Beijing, przy ktorej zrobilismy sobie mala przerwe na… piwo:)

Az by sie chcialo zanucic przesliczna piosenke Katie Malua: “Nine Million Bicycles”;)

Na zakonczenie spotkalismy znajomych, ktorzy wlasnie wracali z ponad 40 km wyprawy za miasto, w ktorej my mielismy stracha wziac udzial z oczywistych powodow – w koncu na rower siadamy tylko 3 razy w roku… A z drugiej strony, po co wyjezdzac za miasto podczas ‘Dia del Peaton’, jezeli mozna spokojnie jezdzic na rowerze po miescie?

* Jezeli znajdziesz sie w Boliwii podczas ‘Dia del Peaton’ to pamietaj, ze nici z podrozy! W tym dniu nic nie jezdzi, przynajmniej z/do Cochabamby (od polnocy do 18.00), bo inne miasta maja troche luzniejsza polityke. Na przyklad w Santa Cruz tylko centrum miasta jest zamkniete dla ruchu. Co mozesz robic w tym czasie? Cieszyc sie swiezym powietrzem oraz szczesliwymi ludzmi, zalewajacymi ulice miasta, oraz robic zdjecia, ktorych nie moglybys w stanie zrobic w innym dniu:)

I consider the September edition of ‘Dia del Peaton‘ in Cochabamba as one of the best so far! Traffic in the city has stopped already at midnight on Saturday, so the next morning the air was free from smog. And as you remember, air pollution is the problem no.1 of the City of Eternal Spring, which this year took the 4th place among the most polluted cities in South America!

This Sunday, however, we could breathe refreshing breeze from the mountains, covered with the snow the night before. After the rain :)

The organization of the ‘Car Free Day’ was perfect – the police patrolled the streets, penalizing those who did not want to pedal or walk. Bah! We even witnessed the real chase and let’s just hope it didn’t end in traffic accident, but only a heavy fine for street pirates.

Our fitness apparently has improved, because we rode our bicycles all around the town and we were neither tired nor in pain the next day :) Have a look at some of my favorite places we’ve visited this time:

– Av. Las Americas with bike graffiti;

– quiet and beautiful as always Plaza Principal:

– Empty market of La Cancha and the police station that offered drinking water and air for tires for free!

– new, wide and airy Av. Beijing, where we made a small break for the … beer :)

At the end, we met some friends, who have just returned from more than 40 km trip out of the city, in which we were too worried to participate for obvious reason. In the end, we ride the bikes only three times a year … But after all, why going out of the city during ‘Dia del Peaton’ if you can ride your bicycle in it?

* If you find yourself in Bolivia during the ‘Dia del Peaton’ you have to remember that you got stuck! On this day there is no driving allowed, at least from / to Cochabamba (from midnight until 18:00), because other cities may have different policy. In Santa Cruz, for example, only city centre is clossed to traffic. So, what can you do if that happens? Enjoy the fresh air and happy people on the streets, and take lots of pictures you wouldn’t be able to take otherwise!

Sa takie specjalne dni w roku, kiedy wszystko w Cochabambie ‘staje na glowie’. W te dni znika, jak za dotknieciem czarodziejskiej rozdzki, ciezka mgielka unoszaca sie nad miastem, warkot silnikow tysiecy samochodow zastepuje muzyka, a same pojazdy ustepuja miejsca wyjatkowo szczesliwym i usmiechnietym pieszym, rowerzystom i tancerzom.

Pierwszy w tym roku dzien pieszych i rowerzystow – ‘Dia del Peaton y la Bicicleta‘, ktory odbyl sie 6-ego kwietnia byl dla nas wyjatkowy, bowiem w koncu moglismy w pelni cieszyc sie naszymi rowerami! Co prawda, dzien wczesniej od roweru Freddiego odpadl pedal, ale cudem udalo nam sie go naprawic przy pomocy Caserity, ktora uzyczyla nam swoich narzedzi. Cudem rowniez przezylismy – naprawiajac rower posrodku bardzo ruchliwej ulicy na ‘slynnym’ bazarze La Cancha, odgrodzeni taczka od skrecajacych pojazdow, otoczeni z z kazdej strony fala ludzi, wozkow, samochodow, autobusow, spalin. Cudem udalo nam sie rowniez zlapac taksowke i wrocic do domu, a bylo juz dawno po zmroku w tej szemranej okolicy.

Ale oplacalo sie, bowiem nastepnego dnia moglismy odetchnac pelna piersia, pedalujac ulicami miasta i odkrywajac jego piekno na nowo. Bo okazuje sie, ze Cochabamba bez smogu, halasu motorow i ciaglych korkow jest bajkowa! Ba! Nie tylko historyczne centrum miasta zachwyca, ale rowniez wiecznie zasmiecone okolice dworca autobusowego i wspomnianego bazaru La Cancha daja sie lubic. Przynajmniej, trzy razy w roku:)

There are special days in the year when everything in Cochabamba ‘turns up side down’. In these days, the heavy ‘fog’ hovering over the city dissolves, the noise of thousands of cars is being replaced by music, and same vehicles disappear from the streets, giving way to unusually happy pedestrians and cyclists.

First this year the pedestrian and cyclist day – ‘Dia del Peaton y la Bicicleta’, which took place on April 6th, was truly an unique experience, as this time we were able to enjoy our bikes! Unfortunately, the day before the pedal of Freddy’s bicycle broke, but miraculously we managed to fix it with the help of Caserita, who lent us her tools. Miraculously we survived – fixing the bike in the middle of a very busy street in the La Cancha market, protected from turning vehicles by wheelbarrow, surrounded by wave of people, trucks, cars, buses, exhaust. Miraculously, we were also able to catch a taxi and go home, as it was already long after sunset in this dodgy neighborhood.

But it was all worth it, because the next day we could breathe freely, pedaling through the streets of the city and discovering its beauty again. It turns out that Cochabamba without the smog, noise and constant traffic jams is magical! Bah! Not only the historical city center enchants, but also always littered area of bus station and ‘infamous’ La Cancha is likeable. At least, these three days a year:)
