Halloween in Bolivia *** Halloween po Boliwijsku

Ewangelicy protestowali dzien wczesniej.

Duende to stworzenie o postaci malego chlopca, cos pomiedzy topielcem, gnomem czy innym skrzatem, ktore wedlug lokalnej legendy wyszukuje niegrzeczne dzieci, bawi sie z nimi, by potem je porwac, a raczej zwabic do lasu, obiecujac latwe zycie z dala od wymagajacych rodzicow, i zabic.

Halloween isn’t the Bolivian tradition, but the tropics have accepted it with no problems. Maybe because there are so many expats here from the Anglo-Saxon countries? I have not seen such an interest in this old Celtic custom in Cochabamba, but maybe that’s because Bolivians from this part of the country have their own ancient traditions, which easily could overshadow the biggest Halloween bash – ‘Day of the Dead’, when people feast on the graves of their loved ones and the ‘Day of the Skulls’, when families walk in the city with the decorated remains of their dead ones  :) —>Dia de los Muertos.

The Halloween gathering in Santa Cruz de la Sierra took place in front of the cathedral (why not!?;) proceeding peacefully. Evangelists were protesting the day before. The first prize for the best disguise, in my opinion, goes to DUENDE.

Duende is a child-like creature, something between an evil goblin and leprechaun that first plays with the naughty children and later kidnaps or rather lures them into the woods, promissing the easy life far from demanding parents, and kills. The boy in a white cloth and enormus sombrero deserved to win for reffering to the local and great acting skills. He actually managed to scare to death a couple of people in the plaza!
