‘All Souls’ Day’ in Santa Cruz *** Boliwijskie ‘Zaduszki’ c.d.

Wszedzie porozstawiane byly male kramiki z jedzeniem, kwiatami, zabawkami, a nawet ubraniami. Kolorowy tlum, kierowany przez oficerow policji, wrecz szturmowal bramy przybytku.

Last year we couldn’t see the traditional Bolivian commemoration of All Souls’ Day at the main cemetery of Santa Cruz (—> click), so this time we decided to visit another place, away from the city center. About an hour on foot from our home, in the fourth ring (4to anillo).

To be honest, the outside of the cemetery looked more like a fairground (there was even a carousel!), than ‘the place of rest’. There were many small stalls with food, flowers, toys or even clothes. A colorful crowd was storming the gates of the cemetery, led by police officers.

Ja, uzbrojona w moj maly Coolpix, ktory po drodze zdazyl wyladowac w kaluzy, mialam nadzieje zrobic zdjecie ‘uczcie cmentarnej‘, o ktorej tyle slyszalam. A tu nic! No moze byl troche bardziej pstrokaty.

I, armed with my little Coolpix, which at some point landed in the puddle on the way, was hoping to take a photo of the famous ‘cemetery feast’, of which I heard a lot. However, the cemetery, filled to the brim, looked quite like this one in the city center. Well, maybe it was a little brighter.

Following the colorful and cheerful procession, we eventualy saw a traditional table, laden with goodies and wawas (figurines baked from bread dough with clay heads), surrounded by celebrating family. I took some pictures from a distance, because I didn’t want to interfere in their privacy, but we were able to hear the scraps of their conversation, during which they remembered their dead one with joy.

Natomiast z wnetrzy grobowcow dalo sie slyszec spiewy i dzwieki gitary – to rodzina spiewala ulubione piosenki swojego zmarlego.

We also heard singing and sounds of a guitar from the inside of the tombs – they were singing favorite songs of the deceased.

Przyznam, bardziej mi sie podobaly takie wesole Zaduszki, niz nasze rodzime.

Mysle, ze naszym przodkom takze by sie to spodobalo:)

I admit, I liked such merry All Souls’ Day better than our Polish one. Despite the whole ‘circus’ surrounding it, it was more natural and truthful. There was also a place for seriousness and prayer, but the real one straight from the heart,  not forced by the priest, parents or aunts.*

I wish we could bring (back) the sincerity and spontaneity to our cemeteries. I can only imagine sitting at the grave of my grandparents, remembering the good old days, sharing their favorite treats with family and friends, singing their favorite songs, laughing together, learning what’s new in our lifes, without fearing that someone next to us will ask us to shut up, because surely, the cemetary it’s not a proper place to talk or smile. I think that my ancestors would liked it better too :)

P.S. Moj Freddy kochany poszedl dzis na bazarek i zakupil takie piekne i swiezutkie wawas (3 bs. kazda)! Teraz mozemy przygotowac stol dla naszych bliskich zmarlych:)

* Other Bolivian cemetery tradition is ‘paying’ for the prayer, especially of poor children, homeless or handicaped people. Bolivians believe that God rather listens to the requests of those more disadvantaged.

P.S. My lovely Freddy went to the market and bought these beautiful and freashly baked wawas (3 bs. each)! Now we can prepare the special table for our departed loved ones:)
