W koncu po czterech miesiacach mieszkania w Cochabambie, udalismy sie na wzgorze San Pedro, aby zobaczych Cristo de la Concordia z bliska. Prawde mowiac,  widzimy Chrystusa z kuchni w naszym mieszkaniu, ale nie ma to jak stanac samemu pod ta wilelka biala statua.

Jak mozna sie dostac na wzgorze Sa Pedro?

1) Teleferico – czyli ‘napowietrzna kolejka liniowa’, z ktorej zoltych kabin mozna podziwiac panorame miasta.

2) Na piechote – do przejscia jest prawie 2000 schodow, co podobno  nie jest latwe w upale, a dodatkowo mozna po drodze spotkac tzw.’CLEFEROS’, czyli ludzi uzaleznionego od kleju. Mozna uslyszec rozne historie o tym jak cleferos czaja sie w krzakach i napadaja bogu ducha winnych turystow, zabierajac im aparaty fotograficzne i pieniadze. Podobno dzieje sie to zwlaszcza po zmroku…

Jezeli jednak ktos ma ochote na wspinaczke, to zaleca sie zostawienie drogocennych rzeczy w domu i wziecie ze soba tylko zapasu wody do picia i grupy znajomych do towarzystwa:)

3) Samochodem (razem z przyjaciolmi) – sposob wyprobowany! Nalezy tylko uiscic drobna oplate za wjazd (jakies 2 bs.) i mozna podziwiac wzgorza otaczajace Cochabambe w warunkach komfortowych, a nawet przystanac kiedy sie chce.

U podnoza Cristo znajduje sie obszerny parking, ‘strzezony’ przez sprzedawczynie napojow i slodyczy. Nie slyszelismy nic o kradziezach, chociaz miejsce to moze do nich zapraszac, bo w koncu Chrystus zwrocony jest do parkingu plecami:).

Pomnik Chrysusa mierzy ponad 34 metry i do czasu ‘Chrystusa Krola’ ze Swiebodzina, byl najwieksza figura Jezusa na swiecie. Nadal jest jednak uwazana za najwieksza, poniewaz swiebodzinski Chrystus ‘oszukuje’ korona.

Cristo jest takze jedna z najwiekszych atrakcji turystycznych Cochababy oraz jej symbolem. W wielu sklepach  mozna kupic ceramiczne figurki z podobizna Chrystusa – tak jak ta, stojaca w korytarzu naszego mieszkania.

Warto jest sie trudzic pod gore, kiedy mozna Cristo podziwiac z dolu?

Po glebokim namysle, mysle ze tak. Wzgorze  San Pedro jest przyjenym miejscem, z ktorego mozna podziwiac panorame miasta oraz okolice, jak i odetchnac swiezym powietrzem. Z jakiegos wzgledu jest to takze ulubione miejsce schadzek mlodych par.

Figura Chrystusa widziana z zupelnie nowej perspektywy jest takze doskonalym tematem do zdjec (ja musze tam wrocic, bo przez przypadek wzielam ze soba aparat z obiektywem 50mm, co mi troche zawezylo pole widzenia). Nie ma to jak zdjecie z wyciagnietymi ramionami na tle statuly, proba podania Chrystusowi butelki z woda czy potrzymanie go za reke:)

Kiedys podobno mozna bylo wejsc do srodka i przyjzec sie swiatu przez ‘dziury’ w szacie Chrystusa, dzis jednak wejscie bylo zabarykadowane. Podobno co niektorzy uzywali wnetrza Chrystusa jako toalety….

Mnie osobiscie Cristo, mimo swych ogromnych rozmiarow, przypomina plastikowa figurke z woda swiecona, jaka mozna zakupic w sanktuariach maryjnych. Brakuje mu tylko nakretki  korony.

Figura Chrystusa pelni takze funkcje orientacyjna – Chrystus stoi na wschodzie miasta Chochabamby, jego lewa reka wskazuje Poludnie a prawa Polnoc.

Niestety, nie udalo mi sie zauwazyc zadnej dzialalnosci religijnej wokol figury. Coz, sam Jan Pawel II mowil przed smiercia, by nie stawiac mu pomnikow – a Cristo de la Concordia zostal postawiony wlasnie dla upamietnienia jego wizyty w kwietnia 1987 roku w Cochabambie.

Finally, after four months of living in Cochabamba, we went to the hill of San Pedro to see the statue of Cristo de la Concordia from up close. In fact, we can admire similar view from the kitchen in our apartment, but there is nothing like to stand under this huge figure.

So, how do you get in there? There are several ways:

1) Teleferico – the ‘aerial cable car’, from which yellow cabs you can admire the beautiful panorama of the city.

2) On foot – you just have to climb nearly 2,000 stairs, which apparently is not easy in the heat, and also you could meet on the way some ‘CLEFEROS‘ – men addicted to the glue. I heard different stories about how cleferos lurk in the bushes and attack  tourists, taking their cameras and money. Apparently it happens especially after dark …

But if someone needs some exercise, it is recommended to leave valuable things in the house, taking only the supply of drinking water and a group of friends for a company :)

3) By car (together with friends) – Proven way! You only have to pay a small fee for entry (2 bs.) and you can admire the surrounding hills of Cochabamba comfortably, stopping on the way when you wish. At the foot of Cristo there is also a large car park, ‘guarded’ by vendor selling beverages and sweets. I haven’t heard anything about the thefts out there, though this place could invite them, as Cristo turned his back on it:)

Monument of Cristo is over 34 meters high and before the ‘Christ the King’ in Swiebodzin, it was the largest statue of Jesus in the world. However, it is still considered the greatest because figure in Poland is ‘cheating’ with it’s crown.

Cristo is one of the biggest tourist attractions of Cochabamba and its symbol. In many stores you can buy ceramic figurines of Christ – we also have one in the hallway.

Is the view from the top better than from the bottom?

After careful consideration, I think so. San Pedro Hill is a nice place, with a panoramic view of the city and its surroundings, and fresh air. For some reason it is also a favorite place for young couples.

Statue of Christ seen from a completely new perspective is also the perfect theme for pictures (I have to go back there, because I took a camera with a 50 mm lens, which narrowed my field of view substantially). There’s nothing like a picture with the arms stretched against the statue, attempt to give Christ a bottle of water or to hold his hand :)

Some time ago, tourists could enter the statue to admire the world from the ‘holes’ in the robe of Christ, but today the entrance is barricaded. Apparently some people had used the interior of Christ as a toilet…

For me, figure of Cristo, in spite of its huge size, reminds plastic figurine for holy water, which you can buy in many sacred places in the world. It lacks only the lid  the crown.

Statue of Christ serves also as a compass – it stands to the east of the city of Chochabamba, the left hand points to the South, and the right points to the North.

Unfortunately, I failed to notice any religious activity around the monument. Well, the pope John Paul II spoke before his death, not to build monuments for him – and  Cristo de la Concordia was built to commemorate his visit (in April 1987) in Cochabamba.
