Bolivian Rainy Summer *** Deszczowe boliwijskie lato

Wstyd. Nasze troski sa niczym w porownaniu z tragedia, jaka spotkala tysiace rodzin w Boliwii – zwlaszcza jej tropikalnej czesci Chapare (Cochabamba), Beni i Pando. Pora deszczowa okazala sie w tym roku bardziej mokra niz ktokolwiek by przypuszczal. Ogromne obszary uprawne zostaly zalane, tysiace ludzi stracilo swoje domy, kilkadziesiat osob zginelo. Dzis przeczytalam o tragedii niedaleko Cochabamby (Morochata), gdzie sciana blota pogrzebala i ludzi, i zwierzeta.

***

I am constantly complaining about our summer which looks more like a winter: walls are turning green, we can’t use our swimming pool, because it’s chilly and raining. The laundry doesn’t dry and smells. Fruit and vegetables are becoming more expensive. We can’t get out of the city, because the roads are flooded. Etc., etc.

Shame on us. Our concerns are nothing in comparison with the tragedy which happened to thousands of families in Bolivia – especially the tropical parts of Chapare (Cochabamba), Beni and Pando. The rainy season turned out this year wetter than anyone would expect. Huge areas of farmland were flooded, thousands of people lost their homes, tens were killed. Today I read about the tragedy near Cochabamba (Morochata), where the wall of mud buried people and animals…

Unfortunately, this weather is perfect for mosquitoes, which spread harmful diseases such as yellow fever, malaria and dengue. In several departments of state the orange alert for the latter was issued. Whoever is planning to visit Bolivia in a nearby future, please bear in mind the serious difficulties, especially in the North – East and center of the country.

Weather forecast for the next week looks alike in many places – rain , rain, rain. Someone mentioned that it will rain until the end of March.

Wow, we are struggling with a long and brutal drought, yet Bolivia has rain and mudslides. Living with Mother Nature is always an interesting ride. My wishes to the people who have lost animals and loved ones.
