El Alto & The Highest Airport in the World *** Najwyzsze lotnisko swiata

El Alto jest dzis najwyzej polozonym przedmiesciem La Paz. Panuje tu surowy klimat, a najwyższa średnia dzienna temperatura latem wynosi 17 °C – miasto lezy bowiem na wysokosci 4150 m n.p.m.

Chaotyczna i prymitywna zabudowa tworzona jest wzdłuż boliwijskiego odcinka drogi panamerykańskiej i poprzecznych do niej ulic – w większości parterowa i jednopiętrowa.

El Alto is actually the highest suburb of La Paz. It has a harsh climate with the highest average daily temperature of 17 ° C in a summer –  all because El Alto lies at an altitude of 4150 m above sea level.

Within the city, there is the International Airport of El Alto. Unfortunately, because of the influx of poor population  from other parts of the country such as miners from abandoned copper mines, the city is growing uncontrollably – chaotic and primitive usually one storey buildings were created along the Bolivian section of Pan American road.

The difficult economic situation of the population is the cause of numerous protests: “In 2003-2005, people systematically blocked the only road leading to the international airport and cut the supply of fuel and gas for La Paz. The riots were called Bolivian gas war and as a result about 70 people lost their lifes “(Wikipedia). Currently the situation is normalized, but there is no certainty that there won’t be further blockages and protests in the future.

I must admit however, that city of El Alto is very beautifully situated, overlooking the Illimani. It’s amazing to be able to admire huge snow peaks of the Andes from the windows of the plane, which in one moment change into the flattest landscape.
